Finally, after weeks of hinting around, I have a few photos of our dining room to share! Remember this?
We have taken the first step to transform this room into something new! Here's our dining room today --
This change is a big one for me, hugely major, actually. I never thought I would say this, but I just couldn't live with the red walls any longer. I loved the room's rich coziness, but I realized that I kept decorating and redecorating, trying to find a way to lighten up. And let's be honest, once you start hanging around with Kim, you're bound to be painting something :)) Speaking of Kim, she wisely told me to prime before we painted. Thanks, girl! Would you believe that I covered those red walls with one coat of primer and only one coat of paint?!! We used Olympic, from Lowe's and were thrilled with the quality. The color is Spice Delight. No fumes, either, as it's no-VOC paint.
It's certainly not my intention for this room to be plain. I can tell already how this brighter palette will give me so much more freedom to decorate seasonally, and use my favorite prints in all new ways. The biggest surprise for me was how, when I put my same decorative items back into the room, I loved them all over again! I was so sure before we painted that I had to change this mirror, but now I just love it. I have struggled with this tabletop for years, but put this display together in about 5 minutes, and I'm so happy with it.
And yes, those are empty frames you see on the wall! Not sure which direction I'm taking with these, I may even conjure up some art of my own. For now, I think I'll plunk some sconces in the large ones, if I can find them, and print out some lovely botanicals from The Graphics Fairy for the smaller frames. Something to play up the vintage beauty of these frames, for sure.
I'm sure I'll be adding something here, also. I sort of can't believe it -- I haven't had a bare wall in this house for years!
Big changes are coming for this table, if I can figure out how to swing it. I can't do without it, but I'm ready for an update! It's just a plywood top table, on 6 legs built of 4x4s. It's huge, seven feet, and houses all of my sewing gear underneath. For now, I have simply folded a canvas drop cloth over, which was an easy quick fix. I am hopeful that I'll have a new twist on this table to show someday soon.
I removed several pieces of furniture from the room, also. I did need them for storage, but the room was just too crowded. They had been crammed into the corners where these chairs now sit. Not sure that these are staying either -- they have been inside, outside, and everywhere in between. But for now, they're holding some pillows from the living room while I look at this print to decide if I want to use it in here, also.
My grandmother's painting, sitting above the window seats, which are only primed at this point. Any suggestions on how I should refinish this frame? I'm thinking white, then distressed. Or the same bright gold as the mirror. Eventually, I'll cover some cushions and line the window seats (which hold all of my extra dishes and serving pieces) with new, fresh pillows.
This fresh start in our dining room has been really exciting! I'll hope you'll join along as I continue to make changes, and improvements to this room. Thank you for coming by to see our progress!
